€2.4bn pumped storage hydro power plant near Detvianska Huta met public opposition
Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba's plan for a €2.4bn pumped storage hydro power plant near Detvianska Huta has aroused public opposition. The political parties PS, SaS and Demokrati, as well as local residents, have launched petitions to stop it. Taraba claims that only five huts and one farm will have to be demolished to make space for the new dam; one of the huts belongs to Ján Lašák, goalkeeper of the team that won gold in the 2002 World Ice Hockey Championship. 70-170 ha are to be flooded.
Taraba admitted that he allowed only five days for comments on the project, which has already been green-lit by the government, to avoid public outcry. He did not discuss the plan with the locals at all.
