Companies collecting municipal waste are faking recycling statistics, say sources of the E daily. Recycled industrial waste is reported as municipal thanks to the absence of a waste management information system, the launch of which has been postponed for years by the Environment Ministry. SIŽP, the environmental authority, has been aware of such suspicions for years but says it has no capacity to verify them. The lower recycling improves the waste collection companies’ bottom line. Slovakia thus recycles much less waste than official statistics show. What’s more, illegal waste disposal is associated with money laundering.
