Demand in the hotel and restaurant segment is rising much slower than hoped
After the second pandemic wave, demand in the hotel and restaurant segments is rising much slower than hoped. Labor shortages are therefore not such a big issue as fewer workers are needed. Restaurants have simplified menus and cut opening hours. They emphasize that the quality of their services is not impacted. Total employment in the sector is 40,000 lower annually as many cooks and waiters switched to being couriers or taxi drivers, and some even work in manufacturing. Salaries are safer and legal there. However, wages in the hospitality sector are growing―the average offered salary rose from €907 in 2019 to last year's €935 and this year's €1,028, data from profesia.sk show.
