Deposit-return scheme for PET bottles and aluminum drink cans starting in January 2022

AVNNMV, an association uniting 80% of soft drink makers, won the tender for managing the deposit-return scheme for PET bottles and aluminum drink cans starting in January 2022. Environment Minister Ján Budaj (OĽaNO) wants to increase the recycling rate of PET bottles from the current 60% to 90% by 2025; similarly, 90% of drink cans should be recycled. Customers will pay a 15 cent return deposit for each bottle and can and will have to return them to one of the 6,500 places. The deposit-return scheme will be built by the producers for an estimated €80m and the state will not incur any costs.
