Drought reducing production in hydroelectric power plants
Slovakia has been facing drought since October 2024, resulting in low production in hydroelectric power plants. In the last quarter of 2024 they produced just 281 GWh of electricity, down 57% annually. In January-February, Slovenské elektrárne recorded the lowest production in 15 years at its hydro power plants and only 59% of the plan. Vodohospodárska výstavba, which owns the Gabčíkovo hydro power plant, is now operating only two of its eight turbines (130 MW out of a full capacity of 720 MW). The production in gas-fired power plants has thus increased.
