Eurostat has incorrect data on Slovak GDP adjusted for purchasing power standards (PPS) that are often cited by the government and media, says Martin Šuster, central bank NBS head of research. In 2018, Eurostat recalculated the Slovak PPS, but only adjusted post-2016 data. Older data are therefore inaccurate. International Monetary Fund data seem to paint correct long-term trends. They show that Slovakia has been catching up to Western Europe’s living standards slowly, yet steadily. In 2009-19, we moved up from 64% to 73% of the EU average.
