Government may tax gambling winnings
Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický announced that next year's fiscal consolidation will include higher taxes on gambling and real estate. The increase in levies for gambling, betting and internet casino operators would bring only relatively small sums (tens of millions) compared to the consolidation, which PM Robert Fico put at €2.3-2.4bn. However, the government may take inspiration from Hungary, which taxes winners at a rate of 25%. In Slovakia, gambling winnings are currently tax-free. Slovaks placed €24.2bn worth of bets last year and won €22.8bn.
