Government launches energy price cap

The state will refund companies 80% of energy costs above €199 per MWh (electricity) and €99 per MWh (gas) in the first quarter of 2023, PM Eduard Heger announced. In the first quarter, he expects the assistance to cost €500m. The same assistance will be available retroactively since September, with costs expected at €300m this year. In March 2023, the government will decide on further assistance. The assistance is capped at €0.5m per company this year and €0.1m per month per company in 1Q23.

The assistance, which Heger calls an energy price cap, does not apply to energy-intensive companies; their assistance scheme will be devised later. Likewise, the government has not yet presented compensations for the public sector and households.

Heger says the assistance is conditional on the approval of the 2023 state budget. The government does not have a majority in the parliament, though.
