Slovak food prices are the lowest in the CEE region

Slovak food prices are the lowest in the CEE region, revised Eurostat data show. Before the revision of the purchasing power parity data, Eurostat claimed that Slovaks pay the most for food among the neighboring countries, with prices 106% of the EU average. Now Slovak prices are 82% of the EU average, the same as in Poland, and lower than in Czechia (97%) and Hungary (99%). The new data more faithfully capture real store prices after discounts; previously the sample was smaller and prices were without discounts. Half of butter is sold at discounted prices in Slovakia, for instance.
