Slovenské elektrárne may soon be among Slovakia’s most profitable firms

Electricity prices on the regional commodity exchanges rose to a 12-year high last week and keep growing amid dearer emission allowances. In the first half of this year, power prices may be 20-30% higher annually. For consumers, this means higher energy prices (household prices will increase from January 2022 by about 10% and some large industrial consumers already pay higher prices). The clear winner is power generator Slovenské elektrárne, which is in dire financial straits due to the delayed and overpriced completion of the Mochovce nuclear power plant but may soon be among Slovakia’s most profitable firms as it generates almost all of its electricity without CO2 emissions in hydro and nuclear power plants. Renewables benefit too and are set to increase their market share at the expense of coal. The gas-powered Malženice power plant has been online since the beginning of this year without any interruption, for the first time since 2013.
