Slovnaft and U.S. Steel may apply for EU funds
U.S. Steel Košice steel mill will be allowed to apply for EU funds for decarbonization of the Slovak industry, the European Commission ruled. Two schemes, totaling €1.1bn, are being made available for the purpose. Large companies do not normally receive subsidies from EU funds as these are intended for SMEs or state and municipal projects. The steel mill plans to replace two of its three blast furnaces, they will use electricity instead of coal. It plans to invest €1.3bn and has not yet specified how much money it will apply for.
Oil refinery Slovnaft will also apply for the funds. It wants to use them for the electrification of part of its technologies, the production of green hydrogen, incineration of municipal waste and the production of reusable chemicals.
