Useless smart electricity meters
Slovakia has committed itself in the EU to install 600,000 smart electricity meters by 2020, in all households, companies or institutions with an annual consumption over 4 MWh. The installation was to cost €90m. By the end of 2021, just 431,000 were installed and they are still barely used. For households they are useless because of the lack of dynamic pricing―the price of electricity is the same all day and will remain low until at least the end of 2027. Companies use smart meters mainly to monitor consumption deviations. A change in regulation and dynamic pricing is not expected in the short term.
