Whirlpool faces back tax bill
The Whirlpool washing machine plant in Poprad has had stable sales of around €300m and a net profit of €10m in recent years. However, it reported a loss of €32m for 2022, which, in addition to energy and material prices, was also due to tax arrears. While in 2019-21 the plant had an income tax bill of €0.2-1.6m, for 2022 it paid €26m. A tax audit focused on 2011-17, with the tax authority FS disallowing costs related to the “residual allocation mechanism and intellectual property license fees”. In addition to the tax, the plant had to pay a €1.8m fine. It made a provision for tax risks of €41m. The plant’s management declined to comment.
Last April, Whirlpool sold the plant to the Turkish company Arçelik (Beko brand).
