ŽS Slovensko, the state-owned rail carrier, has ineffectively invested €1bn in new trains over the previous decade. It failed in cutting its CO2 footprint and taking advantage of the electrification of railway lines, says the Value for Money unit. It bought slow wagons for use on modernized tracks and, conversely, put fast trains on slow local lines. It is spending too much on diesel locomotives, although electric trains carry 80% of passengers in Slovakia. Diesel trains still run on electrified lines.
